Elf Jr. the Musical β Workshop Elf Ensemble Costumes: 15+ Cohesive Looks for Large Casts
Costuming a large elf ensemble for Elf Jr. the Musical is one of the most rewarding β and most complex β challenges in the show. Our βOld-World Santa's Workshop aestheticβ called for variety within cohesion: every elf needed to feel like they belonged in the same magical workshop without wearing identical costumes.
The secret? A mix-and-match system of interchangeable tops, bottoms, and accessories β all built within the same color palette and trim language β that creates 15+ distinct looks while reading as one unified ensemble from every seat in the house.
Easy and budget friendly bow tie made from ribbon purchased at Michaels.
Burgundy bow. Festive as a hairbow or a neckbow.
How the Mix & Match System Works
The plain white t-shirt purchased at your local craft store for $2.99 comes to life when Festive Trim is added to the sleeves!
I LOVE white button down tops. I use them all the time and upcycle often. Easy to find at local resale, parent donations, etc. For this top, I created an adorable ruffle collar and it was 1, 2, 3 simple!
Take a button down top.
Cut off the collar at the seam.
Add white ruffle binding.
One pattern endless possibilities! I use this pattern in almost every show! Love it so much.
ETSY Pant Pattern
HINT: When I need a pattern(s) printed on a large sheet of paper (AO), I go to PDF PLOTTING . Iβm happy with their prices, shipping time, and paper quality. Patterns arrive in a cardboard shipping tube.
Note: I do not recieve a commission on Etsy patterns or PDF Plotting . I just really recommend them:)
This is simple circle skirt that I use again and agin in showsβ¦itβs a workhorse. Long or shortβ¦.more ruffles less ruffles, trim not trim. The options are endless. I donβt typically use a pattern to make these, but here is a good one if needed Circle Skirt Pattern.
The vest pattern is s versatile pattern. I use it in the traditional sense, but also as the base for dresses. Itβs so easy to extend the length of vest and add ruffles for this show specifically. I have 2 patterns I use again and again:
I love scarf screams whimsy! Purchased on Amazon
Thick Gold Rick Rack. Simple trim that pops on stage!
Candy Cane Bias Tape. I use it everywhere. vest, bottom of sleeves, dresses. Takes the costumes to the next level!
Perfect βElfβ gold plastic buttons. They shine in stage lights. These are decorative only/
Whatβs an Elf costume without striped tights. These come in green and red.
We use striped socks too for the knickers/pant costumes.
